What the city is missing: Thierry Cohen photographs cityscapes and then photographs deserts at night, combing the two to show us what our cities would look like with the lights off. The stars are not enhanced, they are actual photos from relative latitudes that would expose the same starry sky view if it weren’t for light pollution. Click on each photo to see which city it is.

Taking some quick sketching breaks from projectsss. OCs from Amariah! I need to draw these guys more often!

I’ve been making some new brushes while constructing the brush setting tutorials (I think I might have two more up next week), and this sketch brush I made for Dual Brush tutorial has become my absolute favorite! Combining that lovely brush and my darling new tablet..ah, digital sketching <3

Yes. I’m very happy! I haven’t been able to work on it too much yet, and I’m so bummed out about that! I caught a nasty cold, and my nose is so stuffy and sinuses swollen and everything hurts and nothing tastes like anything and I either keep sneezing every 3 seconds or there’s a sneeze constantly on its way, you know the friggin annoying feeling when it just… uh, this is irrelevant to the question :D

But yes! I’ve managed to work a little bit, and I got the color profile pretty close to where I wanted it (well, I still trust my computer screen more on color scripting… I need to find some way to properly calibrate the screen). I also found how to get the menus on my Yiynova screen. It kinda made me feel stupid for a while, because when I set my drawing monitor as screen 1, the pen wouldn’t work for a while. It took me way too much time to realize that I had to go to tablet settings and change the monitor mapping from screen 2 to screen 1 as well haha.

The only problem I had was this weird glitch a couple of days ago. I would open a Photoshop file in screen 1 and slide the window to screen 2, and the file I opened would not show properly. I closed the program and opened it again, and the image would still glitch. I deleted the drivers, turned the computer off and on again and re-installed them, and I haven’t had the problem since, so there must’ve been an error with my installation earlier or something. IDK.

I’d say based on the reviews I’ve read and my own experience (of a couple of days, yaaay), I’d say go for it :D.For me it was a huge upgrade from my 7 year old Wacom. My drawing process is so much faster than before. There’s a reason why most of my digital work has been lineless so far, and that’s because doing linearts in my old wacom was sooooo slooooooowww and frustratinggg. But no frustration with this tablet, so I can actually comcentrate on enjoying the process. I’m happy I didn’t settle for an 13 inch tablet because this size is really good for me. As for how it works long-term, that remains to be seen..

Can I ask where you bought your Yiynova? Was it in EU(aka did you pay customs)?

I just got it straight from http://www.yiynova.eu/ . There’s probably a cheaper distributor somewhere, but nah, this was easy. The European distributor is in the Netherlands. They don’t require a credit card, I was really happy I could make the payment via wire transfer. The delivery was about 30 euros and took less than a week.

I think I’m in love.

Pros and cons so far:

+ The first plus would be that this monitor is SO MUCH CHEAPER THAN CINTIQ. The second one: they delivered it within a week of ordering.

+The setup was very easy. I deleted all my previous drivers, rebooted the computer, installed the pen driver (and an Intuos3 driver just in case, as adviced in this article). Reboot computer again, connect the cables and turn the monitor on. Good to go!

+ For a 19 inch tablet monitor the Yiynova sure is light! When working on it, I found it easiest to just hold it in my lap instead of keeping it in the table. It feels like a big sketchbook <3

+ The pressure sensitivity works like a charm, and the drawing experience overall is very pleasant. The pen, to my hand at least, has a nice balance because of the extra weight from the battery.

- I think I need to be very careful with this pen though. I’m remembering all the times I’ve dropped, stepped on or almost rolled over my Wacom Graphire pen without breaking it. The Yiynova pen is sturdier than I expected, and because of the rubber grip it will probably handle some drops, but I don’t think it could take the Graphire pen treatment for very long without breaking..

+Using the Yiynova as a second screen is handy, because I can keep reference and other stuff in my computer screen.

- However, as a Mac user this has a downside: the menu bar stays in my main screen, so whenever I want to do image adjustments or whatnot in Photoshop, I have to return to my main screen to do that. If there’s a way to move the menu to my second screen without giving up the dual screen mode, please let me know?

//edit: Haha, my bad, this was a very easy fix, all I had to do was go to screen settings and slide a white bar on top of my main screen over the other screen. Problem solved!

(Another personal problem that has nothing to do with the overall user experience: I don’t have a VGA port in my iMac, so I had to get an adapter. They didn’t sell one compatible with my computer in any of the shops in my town, and I was too impatient to order one online, so I drove about 100km to another city to get one. That’s cool though, I was supposed to pick up a friend from the train station about 60km away today anyway, so she just had to go one train stop further to get to the city :D. And I got to briefly visit Myrntai as well. It was a good day!)

I still need to do some color calibrating to get the colors to correspond to the ones in my computer screen.

But overall I’m extremely happy with my purchase!

So yay. That’s my experience based on one day. Hope the experience continues to be pleasant.

I kinda feel like I should keep my mouth shut, because I seem to be good at jinxing stuff, but I’m going to tell this anyway: ROUGH SKETCHES FOR CHAPTER 1 OF AMARIAH ARE PRETTY MUCH DONE!! Inspired by Ava’s Demon, I decided to do it all digitally and in color (instead of the original plan of A4 traditionally inked pages), and in a 1 or 2 panels per page type of format. As soon as I get my new tablet monitor I’m going to start inking and coloring the pages, and when chapter 1 is finished and chapter 2 sketched, I think I’m ready to launch the comic :)

This’ll be an exciting summer! Yaaaay!

Even though my dear Wacom Graphire is still functional, and has been a faithful companion since my teens, I have decided to set it aside and get a new tablet. After negotiations with my parents they have agreed to lend me money to get a Wacom Cintiq.

But before I click on any ORDER buttons, I want to ask for opinions: 22HD or 13HD? Of course it’ll take me half the time to pay back for the 13, so that’s the one I’ll probably get, but if anyone has experience with both the 22 and the 13, I ask this: IS IT REALLYREALLY WORTH IT? Like REALLYREALLYREALLY?
